Characteristics of

Male Body Hair

The characteristics of each body hair type are unique to its specific body area. The differences range from negligently small to enormous.

Characteristics - cell growth and differentiation The differences between individuals are also huge.

The hair's basic anatomy doesn't change just because the hair is on another body.

Each type of hair looks right on its specific body site.

Can you imagine how we would look with pudendum or pubic hair for eyelashes or eyebrows!!!

Hair carries a negative electrical charge, and dirt clings to negative ions.

In order to clean hair efficiently the negative charge must be reversed. That is the reason why soap and shampoo are alkaline. Baby shampoo is without charge, meaning it isn't alkaline nor is it acidic.

Hair grows much like grass. While the visible hair is removed, more of the same lurks just beneath the skin surface. Hair is nourished by blood supply to the dermal papilla. While the dermal papilla is alive the hair will be alive and growing.

The hair is killed once the dermal papilla is destroyed. Read more about this at the follicle page.

If you remove a hair you will notice a white bulb around the bottom. This is not the root. This bulb can be thick and big or tiny and thin. It is simply an indication of how well or badly nourished and how strong or weak the hair is.

Men and women have roughly the same amount of hair follicles on their faces, but luckily most remain dormant on female faces. Elevated androgens (male hormones) can be responsible for its activation.

The underlying problem might even be hirsutism. Hormonal problems might lead to coarser and darker facial hair.

Characteristics - skin and hair structure Plucking or tweezing can stimulate the follicle by means of an automatic response from a skin repair hormone.

The blood supply to the hair can also be stimulated, resulting in more vigorous growth.

Luckily the opposite can also happen. The follicle can become damaged. A damaged follicle will from then on produce a hair of diminished thickness and slower growth tempo.

If you continue tweezing the hair out, the damage can eventually become so severe that the follicle might stop producing a hair. What a joy!

Unwanted hair can also be drug-induced, but doctors are aware of that after-effect, and only prescribe the offending medication with great caution.

Hair can fall out because of stress, sickness, continuous pulling, medication (eg chemotherapy), fluctuating hormone levels, ageing, anaemia and other metabolic disorders.

The lowest part of the follicle bulb is called the matrix. This is where cell growth takes place. It means they all still look alike, but will eventually develop into a specific type of hair.

A little higher up in the follicle is the critical level where the cell differentiation takes place. Here the hair takes on the specific characteristics of the type of hair type it is building for that specific body area.

Hair growing on the body is classified as:
  • capilli - head
  • supercilia - eyebrows
  • barba - face
  • cilia - eyelashes
  • vibrassae - nostrils
  • tragi - ears
  • hirci - armpit
  • pubes - pubic region

Read the table below to see what police forensics look for when they try to solve a crime. A hair can give indication of sex, DNA, age, body area it was from, etc. Police can get lots of info from a hair found on a crime scene.
