Epilator Types

Spring, Tweezer And Disk

Epilator types have evolved from the first device Epilady made with a spring to the worldwide current favourite Braun Silk Epil Xelle available in various nice colors.

Epilator types - manual tweezers They are nothing but the mechanical version of the humble manual tweezer.

Does it hurt? Of course!

Remember the hair is pulled out of the skin by the root!

Luckily the newest models have all sorts of pain-relief features built into it.

I would not describe the sensation as "pain", but much rather just as discomfort.

Which epilators are available and which one should I buy?

Epilator devices are just one of several of the epilation methods available.

Some of the most reliable, popular and easy-to-use brands are Braun (Silk-Epil), Norelco (Satinelle), Epilady (Ladybikini, Discrette, Discrette Plus, Legend, Duet), and Grundig (Lady Care). Other brands are Philips, Emjoi, Remington, Veet, Carmen, BaByliss, Panasonic etc. (View at Amazon.com)

Coiled spring Epilady

Epilator types - original Epilady epilator with coiled spring This was the original epilator design of Epilady and was manufactured by Mepro according to IS09002 regulations.

Manufacturing of the this type has been discontinued.

A coiled spring was bowed into a circle, resulting in tightly squeezed together coils on the inside and slightly open coils on the outside of the circle.

The hair got caught in the vibrating coil and were pulled out.

Remington copied this design for their Lady Remington Smooth and Silk, but made a few design changes.

They used a series of metal discs in a curved design instead of a coil bent into a full circle. Epilady now mainly produce a variety of tweezer type models.

Rotating tweezer barrel types

These epilator types looks a lot like an electric razor, but without the sharpened blade. It has at least two, or up to six, rows of high velocity rotating discs that acts like tweezers (electric rubber rollers or coiled spring) that catch the hair to pull it out. It is also called rotary tweezers or rotary epilators.

Rotating disk barrel epilator types

Epilator types - rotating barrel epilator's head A series of rapidly rotating metal plates (exposed at one or both sides) are mounted in a plastic housing in the head of the device.

As the head rotates, the tips of the plates create a tweezing effect when they move together and apart.

Disc-operated epilators are a newer design and usually cause less pain than the rotary tweezer head.

When the plates rotate away from the skin it grips and pulls the hair out and releases it as the plates separate again.

The released hair is discarded by means of centrifugal force. As the device is slowly moved over the skin a continuous cycle of gripping, pulling, extracting and discarding of hair takes place.

How does an epilator work?

Epilator types - Braun Silk Epil Epilator Head In both barrel types, the hair to be plucked-out are trapped between the projecting portions of the epilation blades or discs. These hair are then gripped or pinched between the projecting zones of two successive tweezing parts.

Finally, these hair are ejected by centrifugal force during the stage of opening of the gripping zones as the rotating barrel or disc completes its cycle.

The speed and number of tweezing components have also been increased so that a greater area can be covered in a shorter amount of time. Quicker rotation of the plucking elements also reduce pain.

Newest epilator types

Epilady remained a leader in development and a newly designed Epilady arrived on the market in 1996 called "Discrette." This was the first epilator with a disc-operated head. It boasted a virtually pain-free experience because of the high velocity movement of the rotating discs.

Nowadays there are many epilator types, brands and models available on the market, all based on the original Epilady design. People have difficulty deciding which one is the top/best epilator types to purchase. Currently the most popular brand worldwide is the Braun Silk Epil Xelle.

Places to buy them

All the epilator types can be purchased at many drugstores and at popular nationwide chain superstores. It is also very convenient to buy from Amazon.com or even e-Bay.

Make sure that you will be able to exchange your purchase if you are dissatisfied with it in any way. Will you get your money back or will you have to take something else? What is the policy on repairs and warrantees?
