The follicle depth of a growing hair follicle determines, but should only be taken as a rough guide, to calculate what the diameter of a hair shaft might be once it leaves the skin opening.
The human body is almost covered with hair, except in a few places. You can find various hair facts here.
Children's bodies only have fine vellus hair.
Once the child reaches puberty, the androgens or hormones changes the vellus hair to terminal hair.
The androgenic hair starts to grow in gender specific places on the body.
This means girls and boys grow hair in different places.
Girls don't grow hair on their chests and faces. Normally boys grow more and darker body hair than girls, but genetics has the last say here.
Hair growth cycles
1. Anagen phase The growth of body hair happens in a very distinct growth cycle. The cycle always starts with the anagen phase.
This phase is sub-divided into pro-anagen, mes-anagen and met-anagen phases. Most of the growth takes place during the met-anagen phase of the cycle.
