Follicle Depth

Determines Diameter Of Hair Shaft

The follicle depth of a growing hair follicle determines, but should only be taken as a rough guide, to calculate what the diameter of a hair shaft might be once it leaves the skin opening.

The human body is almost covered with hair, except in a few places. You can find various hair facts here.

Children's bodies only have fine vellus hair.

Once the child reaches puberty, the androgens or hormones changes the vellus hair to terminal hair.

The androgenic hair starts to grow in gender specific places on the body.

This means girls and boys grow hair in different places.

Girls don't grow hair on their chests and faces. Normally boys grow more and darker body hair than girls, but genetics has the last say here.

Hair growth cycles

1. Anagen phase
The growth of body hair happens in a very distinct growth cycle. The cycle always starts with the anagen phase.

This phase is sub-divided into pro-anagen, mes-anagen and met-anagen phases. Most of the growth takes place during the met-anagen phase of the cycle.

Follicle depth of waxed male pubic hair in wax Follicle depth of terminal androgenic body hair reaches the deepest point below the skin during the active anagen growing phase.

The hair receives nourishment through the dermal papilla.

More specifically, this depth is reached during the mes-anagen phase of the hair growth cycle.

2. Catagen phase
During the catagen phase the hair follicle goes into a period of change and then stops growing towards the end of the phase.

The photo above shows a piece of wax that had been used for a male brazilian wax treatment. It clearly shows how deep the follicles are embedded inside the skin, because the wax can only adhere to the part of the hair that is outside the skin.

3. Telogen phase
The hair growth cycle ends with the telogen phase. This is also known as the resting phase. The shrunken follicle moves upwards towards the skin's surface, taking the hair with it. The hair is shedded at the end of this phase.

The depth of the follicle can serve as a very good guide as to how thick or thin the hair shaft that is growing out of the follicle will be once it leaves the skin.

How thick will the hair be?

After puberty androgenic body hair starts to grow. The places where these androgenic hair will appear are gender specific. These hair also have different characterestics on different body parts.

Skin Type Hair Follicle Depth Hair Coarseness Diameter
Hair Shaft
I Less than .001 inch Very fine Less than 1mm
II .001 to .002 inch Fine 1 to 2mm
III .002 to .003 inch Medium 2 to 3mm
IV .003 to .004 inch Coarse 3 to 4mm
V .004 to .005 inch Very coarse 4 to 5mm
VI .005 to .006 inch Extra coarse 5mm
VII More than .006 inch Super coarse 5mm

Some coarse hair, like the eyebrows and eyelashes, are exceptions to the above rule. They have shallow follicles, but are coarse hair.

Scalp hair are embedded the deepest into the dermis, with pubic hair and underarm hair (axilla hair) next in line. Fine vellus hair do not have well developed follicles, because they don't really need it.
