Hair Growth Cycle

Anagen, Catagen And Telogen Phases

The growth cycle of hair happens in three distinct phases. Various changeables exist in vellus and androgenic hair.

Growth cycle - anagen, catagen and telogen phases This means huge individual differences are experienced.

Hair in all three phases are always simultaneously present on the human body.

This is called the cycle of hair growth.

All hair all over the body goes through these different phases.

Luckily all the hair aren't always in the same phase.

Because that would mean everybody would go through phases of total bodily baldness and then through total hairiness.

Anagen, Catagen And Telogen Phases

Different growth cycles are necessary, otherwise there would be an akward time of total bodily baldness. The cycles of animals are seasonal to provide maximum heat during the cold winter months.

It must be remembered that time spent in each phase differs greatly from one individual to the next. Adjacent hair can all be in different stages of the cycle. Different hair colour, follicle shapes and body areas also affect the length of the three phases.

These three phases of hair growth are found with vellus hair as well as the secondary sex characteric androgenic hair. Male body hair is normally coarser than female androgenic body hair.

At any given time, around 85-90% of most people's hair follicles are in the growing anagen phase, 1-2 percent in the transitional catagen phase and approximately 10-14 per cent are in the resting telogen phase.

What secrets can a human hair reveal?

Growth cycle cross-section of a hair Hair growth, or the lack of it, tells you everything about the condition of the body it has been growing on.

It is also easy to know the age and ethnicity of the body it came from by studying the hair.

Although dead, hair doesn't lie. Sickness, stress, malnutrition, age, etc are all noticeable in the condition of the hair.

Poison remain in the hair shaft even after the hair is shed after of 2-6 years. Before making a diagnosis, a physician should always have a look at a patient's hair too.

Hair is nourished from the dermal papilla at the very bottom of the follicle. The hair follicle with the hair in it moves up and down in the dermis during the different phases of the cycle.

Several hair per follicle opening

Growth cycle - several hair using same follicle opening Occasionally a new anagen hair grows beside a telogen club hair that has not been shed yet. They are NOT growing from the same follicle, but can use the same follicle opening.

Several hair group together closely, all using the same follicle opening in areas of dense follicle dispersion.

Quite often several adjacent hair, in different phases of the cycle, all use the same follicle opening. This situation is much more common with skin types IV to VI according to the Fitzpatrick classification scale.

Skin types I to III normally don't have coarse, thick terminal hair growth. You can determine your skin type by means of the DIY Fitzpatrick classification questionnaire and scale.
