Hair Regrowth

The Natural Hair Growth Tempo

The hair regrowth chart helps you to choose the appropriate hair removal methods for each body part according to the approximate time those areas might be hair free afterwards.

First you have to decide if you would like to use a temporary depilation method, or one of the much longer lasting epilation hair removal methods. They all have advantages and drawbacks.

Epilation methods and hair regrowth

Epilation methods weaken hair regrowth Epilation means the hair with its root is removed with great force from the skin. The natural growth cycle gets totally upset by this.

Until the follicle produces a new hair it will remain empty for several weeks.

Read more about the process the follicle goes through during the production of a hair.

This action happens during the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle.

The epilation methods are waxing, sugaring, tweezing, epilator device, laser and intense pulsed light.

Any epilation method, administered over a long period of time, eventually weakens the hair follicles.

This will cause the hair to grow out finer, lighter and slower after every treatment. The loss of hair can even become permanent if a follicle dies.

Unfortunately tweezing can stimulate the blood supply to the hair, as well as to a repair hormone. This can lead to more vigorous and more rapid hair growth in stead of slowing the growth.

Hair depilation and hair regrowth

Hair regrowth is slowed with hair growth inhibitors The depilation methods are shaving, trimmers and hair removal cream or lotion.
Of these three, shaving gives the least temporary results. Rapid hair growth is evident after depilating.

Temporary depilation methods don't have any slowing or hastening effect on hair's regrowth rate.

The continuous use of hair growth inhibitors will stretch the hair free time to several months.

The best results are achieved when it is applied after any epilation hair removal. In some cases the results can even become permanent.

Interesting things about hair regrowth

Normally males have more and thicker body hair than females.

The hair removal success rate greatly depends upon the amount of hair (follicle density) you actually start off with. Few and fine hair will give much better and faster results than a lot of dark coarse hair.

Another factor is how fast the individual's natural hair growth actually is. It will appear as if the removal method is more successful when a person has a naturally slow hair growth rate.

Where on the body does the hair grow fastest? The scalp hair grows fastest followed by the beard. Where does it grow slowest? The eyebrows and eyelashes.

That is why mistakes made while grooming eyebrows can take many months to be corrected. Eyebrow hair can very easily stop growing if it has been over-plucked.

It is wrong to say an adolescent boy should hold of shaving his face for as long as possible. The androgenic hair will appear whether he shaves or not. It is hormone driven.

And for that matter, a girl won't suddenly get a lot of hair on her legs because she started to shave them. Nor does it change the thickness of the hair at all. Color and amount of body hair is genetic.

High levels of androgen (male hormones) is responsible for the coarseness of body hair as well as the amount of hair.

Men and women have about the same amount of hair follicles on their faces, but in most cases the follicles remain dormant on female faces. Abnormal hormonal activity can activate them to start producing hair.

Traction alopecia (hair loss) can occur where there is a lot of abnormal stress on the follicle. This can be administered through:
  • very vigorous brushing of the hair,
  • hair pulled away from the face and against its natural direction of growth,
  • tight African weave type hairstyles worn continuously,
  • chemicals and action of perming or straightening the hair.

The table below explains what the expected time of being without body hair might be on the different body areas when the different hair removal methods are used.

The length of being hairless can at most be an approximate guess, because the hair free time is dependent upon several factors. Virgin hair regrows at a much slower rate than previously removed hair.
