Hair Shaft Is

Hard Durable Protein Called Keratin

A hair shaft is a dead structure composed of hard durable protein called keratin. Humans have soft vellus and coarse androgenic terminal hair while unborn foetuses have lunago hair.

Structure Of Skin And Hair

The hair shaft is the visible part of a hair which extends above the skin. Millions of hair together on a head are described as your "Crowning Glory". People, and especially females, can spend endless hours grooming their hair.

We humans wash, condition, colour, curl, comb, tweeze, bleach, perm, dry, pull, heat and just about destroy our hair in the quest to look presentable. The media exploit people's vulnerability and that is costing consumers a lot of money.

Body hair get subjected to hair removal methods like shaving, clipping, tweezing, waxing, sugaring, threading, chemical removal, light based methods removal and electrolysis in an effort to get rid of it.

Hair on all the different body parts can be removed by the various methods of removal, ranging from temporary to permanent.

The hair growing on the body is classified as:
  • capilli - head
  • barba - face
  • supercilia - eyebrows
  • cilia - eyelashes
  • vibrassae - nostrils
  • tragi - ears
  • hirci - armpit
  • pubes - pubic region

General Condition Of Hair

Hair Shaft With Sebum From Sebaceous Gland The hair mirrors the physical and emotional condition of the person it is growing on.

Bad eating habits, a toxic environment and other unhealthy habits are clearly visible in the hair.

Emotional turmoil, sickness, medication, addictions, etc are clearly visible to the trained eye.

The untrained eye simply notice that the person's hair don't look good.

After receiving chemotherapy for cancer, hair normally fall out. It will grow back, but may look and feel different.

When your physical condition is off, your hair might be dull, lank, oily, dry or falling out. The scalp might be itchy, flacky or have dandruff. In short, when you are in bad shape, the condition of your hair shaft is in bad shape too.

Once cortex cells are keratinized above the hair follicle, nothing can alter the state of a hair. Expensive conditioners cannot mend a damaged or split hair.

Anatomy Of A Hair

The anatomy of a hair can be studied when it is dissected lenghtwise as well as cross-wise. I am sure you are not very interested in a biology lesson, therefore I won't write a medical handbook on the subject.

Lengthwise the human hair is divided into the hair root or follicle below the skin, and the hair shaft that has already emerged from the skin's surface. In other words, the visible part.

The main purpose of hair is to retain and regulate bodily warmth. One of the main functions of a hair is to act as a sensitive touch receptor. Genetics play a huge role in hair type (straight, curly or frizzy) as well as colour.

Because of huge differences in the anatomy of the hair shaft and the hair root they will be discussed separately.

Anatomy wise, the hair shaft is the part of the hair that has emerged from the skin's surface. Hair on different parts of the body will reach the end of its growth cycle and fall out at different intervals. An ingrown hair is always a nuisance and should be dealt with promptly, but with as little trauma to the red and swollen skin as possible.

Because the shaft of the hair is totally devoid of feeling, hair can be cut, shaven, etc without inflicting any pain. All hair are dead, not just grey hair. Grey hair contains little or no melanin or chemical pigment to give it colour.

The hair is formed by epidermal cells, which is mainly protein, that later keratinize. Cutting the hair does not in any way slow down or hasten regrowth. Nor can hair grow out in a new colour.

Cross-Section Of The Hair Shaft

Lengthwise Section of Hair Shaft The cuticle or outer layer is a single layer of keratinized flattened, overlapping cells that get flatter as they get older.

These cells are translucent and contain no pigment, thus reflects light and gives the shine to hair.

The cells are arranged like roof shingles. When the hair is damaged the scales open and hair becomes porous.

The cortex is the major portion of the shaft which contains densely packed elongated keratinized cells pigmented with melanin that give it its colour. There are air spaces between these cells.

The medulla is the center of the hair and is only formed in terminal hair. It is absent in vellus or very fine body hair. The cells are large and loosely connected and keratinised. There are large air spaces between the cells to reflect light and give sheen to hair and to regulate temperature.
