How To Use An Epilator?

Work In Slow Upward Circles

Knowing how to use an epilator can quickly be mastered. It can be used on most areas of the body where you want to do hair removal. Start at the lowest point and work upwards in circles.

How to use an epilator - original Epilady device Do yourself a favour and put a towel or sheet down on the floor to work on.

It is much easier to shake out the towel or rinse the bath or shower.

It is a lot of work to vacuum the carpet afterwardsor mop the tiles.

Be warned that the first time will always be your worst experience.

I can best describe it as a funny, stinging sensation.

Many years ago I used to epilate my underarms and legs, but later I just couldn't stand that feeling anymore and stopped using it. I really hope you won't experience it the way I did, because the results are fantastic.

What to expect from an epilator

You will quickly figure out how to use your new machine. Each time afterwards will be a little less painful, until eventually you will hardly feel anything.

Be prepared that you might get ingrown hair once the regrowth starts. It can be the result when follicles become distorted because the hair is plucked out by force.

Daily, or at the least every second or third day, skin exfoliation is necessary to prevent the skin from growing over the follicle opening.

Just keep reminding yourself that you won't have to shave daily. That will make it bearable. The hair will grow back softer, lighter and sparser.

It is a little painful, but definitely worth the suffering. I would definitely not recommend that you use it on your facial hair.

Care must be taken if you want to epilate the pubic hair. Practice how to use an epilator on this sensitive region.

Ensure that the skin is pulled taut, or it might be pulled inside the head of the device. This is especially important for the loose skin of the scrotum.

Practice how to use an epilator, because practice makes perfect. Find the technique that works best for you and stick to it.

What to expect from an epilator

How to use an epilator - numb skin with ice I would definitely recommend that you have a hair waxing on the area you plan to use the device on waxed first. Thereafter you can do weekly up-keep on the regrowth. Or as often as you deem necessary.

Never use directly on long hair. Always use a clipper or trimmer or scissor to trim hair to a manageable length of about 2-5mm.

Exfoliate the skin the day before the treatment, but not on the same day you plan to use the device.

Pubic hair removal (specifically on your testicles) with this device is your personal choice. Do a test patch on the testicles first.

Or get your lady-love to do it for you. Give her a few instructions on how to use an epilator. Pop two painkillers an hour in advance to keep from appearing sissy to her.

Use at night to give redness time to fade and the irritated skin time to calm down during the night. Sleep naked that night.

Tips on how to use an epilator

  1. Test first - Test to decide which of the following works best for yourself in terms of ease of removal and discomfort level:
    - directly after shower on hot skin;
    - slightly cooled skin;
    - or completely cooled skin.
  2. Hair length - The hair must be about 2-5mm long for the tweezers to grab hold. Assist by using the free hand to pull the skin taught while simultaneously lifting the hair up.
  3. Skin exfoliation - Skin must be exfoliated, cleaned and dried. A hot bath or shower will relax the arector pilli muscles and the pores will be slightly open. The treatment will be easier and less painfull.
  4. Apply heat - Heat dry towels in the microwave and place on skin prior to treatment to open the pores. The hair will be easier to dislodge from the opened pores.
  5. Soften hair - Accordingly the hair will also be softer directly after the bath and harder when cooled off. Test to see if softened or hard hair works the best for you personally.
  6. Start low - Always start at the lowest point and work upwards = ankle to knee. Work against the hair growth direction. Be warned that the backs of the knees are very sensitive.
  7. Different speeds - Switch to high speed on areas of dense growth and to slow speed on sensitive areas. You will need help on your back of course.
  8. Circles - Fight the urge to work fast and irratic. The best results are achieved with slow circular movements without pressing too hard or breaking contact with skin.
  9. Right angle - The best "how to use an epilator" tip is to hold the device as close to a right angle to the skin as possible to achieve the best results.

Post epilation tips

  1. Apply ice - Rinse skin with cold water after treatment to help the pores close faster. You can even rub the skin with ice cubes wrapped in a cloth. The faster the pores close, the lower the possibility of infection.
  2. Disinfect - Apply soothing Aloe Vera gel or any other disinfecting lotion (eg 50/50 Hibiscrub diluted with water) on the treated area.
  3. How to use an epilator - soothe skin with baby powder

  4. Moisturize - To soothe and calm the skin, apply lashings of unfragranced moisturiser.
  5. Soothe - End with a good dusting of baby powder to soothe the irritated skin.
  6. Skin healing - Don't exfoliate for at least 2-3 days. The skin needs time to heal and for the irritation to subside. Thereafter exfoliation must start again to prevent ingrown hair.
  7. No clothes - Sleep naked that night to avoid clothing shafing against the treated skin. If you did pubic hair removal you shouldn't wear tight underwear until the skin has healed.
  8. Exfoliate - Skin exfoliation is vital after the treatment, because the hair will have trouble growing out of the skin with their soft tips.
  9. Ingrown hair - Dislodge all ingrown hair with a very thin disinfected needle, but don't tweeze them out before the skin has healed completely.

How do you clean the device?

Dismantle the device as far as you can. Use the supplied cleaning brush to dislodge any hair stuck inside. Clean the outside with a soapy cloth and dry.

If it is a wet/dry model you can wash it with soapy water. Let dry properly before you put it away again.

If you use the cordless type epilator you must remember to recharge the batteries.
