Ingrown Hair Home Remedies

Treat Inflamed Skin After Hair Removal

Lots of ingrown hair home remedies can be found in the kitchen to soothe away skin rashes and bikini bumps, caused by removing unwanted hair.

Store bought products like Vaya Smooth Cream are expensive and can be harsh on the skin.

You run the risk of causing even more damage to the irritated skin if your skin is sensitive to some or any of the ingredients.

What did people do about this problem before all the products were available in the shops?

They made do with whatever they had. They found things to use in the kitchen and garden.

Skin exfoliation is very important

Things To Use For Skin Exfoliation I can't stress the importance of skin exfoliation enough.

Do it before the skin is inflamed, red and sensitive.

It must preferably be done daily, or at the very least, every third day.

You can only do damage control once the problem of ingrown hair is there!

The easiest and surest way to keep ingrown hair on the body at bay is to do daily dry skin brushing before your bath or shower.

Remember to moisturise the skin afterwards with a good body lotion to keep the skin soft enough for the hair to grow through the skin.

Home treatment for ingrown hair

Avoid taking a very hot bath or shower for at least 48 hours after any epilation hair removal methods. Luke warm water is better and much more soothing to the skin than hot water.

The follicle openings or pores are still wide open and you can very easily get infected ingrown hair. If the follicle becomes infected with bacteria or fungus, it can lead to folliculitis.

Are you interested in some more after waxing care tips? After 48 hours you should start with daily exfoliating and moisturising of the skin. Avoid ingrown hair by keeping the skin from becoming hard, while removing the dead skin at the same time.

Topical ingrown hair home remedies

Aspirin And Witch Hazel For Ingrown Hair The main problems experienced with ingrown hair are itching and redness because the hair can't get out of the skin.

You need to calm the itching, and you need to remove the skin that has grown over the follicle opening.

This mixture below can either be used as a mild scrub, hardworking face pack or it can be left on overnight on an inflected hair follicle.

Witch Hazel can be bought very cheaply at any drugstore or supermarket. In South Africa (where I live) Aspirin tablets are known as Disprin. The active ingredient is acetylsalicylic acid.

  • Use uncoated white Aspirin or Tylenol tablets. The number of tablets to be used will depend on the size of the area you wish to treat. Use your own judgement.
  • Use two spoons and hold both spoons in the normal way. Rest the bottom spoon on the table. Put the tablets in the bottom spoon. Use the other spoon to carefully crush the tablets to a fine powder.
  • Add a few drops of water or Witch Hazel to the mixture with a medicine dropper. Rather start with too little, than too much water. Add more if needed. Use the back of the top spoon to mix it into a smooth paste.
  • The water can be substituted with Witch Hazel for even better results. And it works fantastic as an alcohol free skin toner.
  • Use gentle circular motions to rub the paste over the area with ingrown hair. Rinse off with clean water.
  • For really stubborn areas the paste can be covered with gauze or something suitable and left on overnight. Rinse off the next morning. Repeat if necessary.

Other ingrown hair home remedies

Kitchen Remedies For Ingrown Hair The items shown in the photo and discussed below are normally available in most kitchens.

If you don't have the things in your kitchen, you'll be able to buy it cheaply at the nearest supermarket or drugstore.

Concentrate the treatment on the areas you know are prone to ingrown hair.

Repeat the treatment you chose morning and evening until the problem is resolved.

You actually have quite a choice of ingrown hair home remedies you can use.
  • Acne Medications - Because it contain the active ingredients benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, they work wonders as ingrown hair home remedies on inflamed skin.
  • White Toothpaste - Dab a little bit on all the infected hair follicles. Don't rub it in. Leave on overnight. Rinse off with warm water the next morning.
  • Honey - Apply some to a clean skin in the evening and leave on overnight. Honey is nature’s own antibiotic, bacteria killer and skin softener. The softer the skin, the easier the hair can penetrate the skin.
  • Aloe Vera - Try to get the fresh juice of an Aloe Vera plant and apply it directly to the area you want to treat. If the fresh product is unavailable, buy the highest concentrate of any Aloe Vera product you can get. Apply twice daily for three days to get rid of itching and inflammation.
  • Epsom Salts - Soak in a hot bath to which two cups of Epsom Salts has been added. Or prepare your own ingrown hair home remedies by mixing Epsom Salts and water. Prepare a paste and rub into wet skin in circular motions. It can be washed off or left overnight for even better results.
  • Cucumber - Puree half a cucumber and add a third cup of milk to it. Pop into fridge to get cold. Soak a piece of gauze in the mixture and apply on skin. Leave overnight and rip off in the morning.
  • Witch Hazel or Apple Cider - Use either after performing hair removal. Both are very good to use as an after shave lotion. Don’t worry, the smell will quickly evaporate.
  • Cortisone - Consider using hydro-cortisone cream like Cortaid for a few days. Never use cortisone for long periods of time without medical supervision.
  • Tea Tree Oil - Mix 50ml very pure an Aloe Vera gel with 4 drops Tea Tree oil. Use this mixture after waxing while the follicles are still open and very susceptible to infection.
  • Scrub - Prepare an hydrating skin exfoliating scrub at home with extra virgin olive oil, honey and sugar.
