Laser-vs-IPL Device

Differences And Similarities

A laser-vs-IPL comparison will reveal only a few differences between the two devices. However, numerous similarities are shared by these two photo-epilation devices that work with selective photo-thermolysis to damage hair follicles.

The main differences are present because laser light characteristics are unique to lasers. No other light source is anything like a laser light beam.

Handpiece Of IPL Device The huge number of similarities that become apparent with a laser-vs-IPL comparison are really astounding.

The photo is of my IPL's handpiece. It delivers a spot size of 11mm x 44mm.

The light is delivered from the yellow rectangle at the bottom of the photo.

Handpiece Of My IPL Device

Although the specific characteristics of the laser beam are unique, the laser is used in much the same way an intense pulsed light (IPL) device is used for hair removal purposes.

The fact that a laser beam can be tuned to produce an extremely small or large spot size are not applied to its full extent for hair removal purposes.

These unique laser features are mostly put to good use in the surgical field (eg ophthalmology, urology, dentistry etc).

Do you live in Gauteng or near Pretoria, South Africa? Are you interested in hair removal by means of IPL device, sugaring or waxing? Or maybe a full body Kahuna massage? Please fill in the form at my Contact Me page.

Differences : Laser-vs-IPL

Laser
Coherent: related in phase over long distances
Monochromatic: can tune out unwanted colors
Collimated: beam spreads very little
Power source: intensified energy from stimulated emission
Every type works on a different wavelength
Don't use filters to block out wavelengths
Can safely treat skin types I-VI
Expensive, slow, smaller spot size
Handpiece is never in contact with skin
Handpiece is quite small, therefore easy to use in small areas

Intense Pulsed Light
Non-coherent: phases cross each other
Polychromatic: broad spectrum visible light
Divergent: beam spreads a lot
Xenon flash lamp is power source
All IPL's work on 500-1200nm wavelengths
Use cutout filters to get various wavelengths
Limited to treat skin types I-IV
Less expensive, faster, larger spot size
Probe is in direct contact with the skin
Bigger handpiece can be difficult to handle in confined spaces

Similarities: Laser-vs-IPL

  • Hair removal results achieved are roughly the same for both devices.
  • Skin chromophores water, melanin and haemoglobin are targetted.
  • Unwanted hair mustn't be long, but just visible above the skin's surface.
  • Possible to remove 20-40% anagen phase hair in a single treatment.
  • Results can last for up to 12 months, or can even be permanent.
  • Hair removal involves light absorption by the chromophore melanin.
  • Hair must be darker than skin for preferential light absorption by melanin to occur.
  • Best results are achieved with very dark hair on very light coloured skin.
  • Light must penetrate skin at a right angle for best results.
  • Active skin cooling (ice, gel, spray) effectively reduces pain and side effects.
  • Heat can cause biological damage to skin unless it is cooled to below zero temperatures.
  • Side-effects are hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and blistering.
  • Skin cooling must be performed before, during and after firing every shot.
  • Selective photothermolysis are used to destroy the dermal papilla without damaging the skin.
  • The emitted light is transformed into heat that can damage the hair follicle.
  • Coagulation of the follicle and dermal papilla takes place when temperature above 70 degrees Celcius are reached.
  • Dermal papilla is the target that needs to be destroyed to prevent future hair growth.
  • Not indicated for clients with heart disease, varicose veins or thyroid problems.
  • Clients taking medication that causes photo-sensitivity or immune-suppressant drugs must not be treated.
  • Not for clients with connective tissue disease or auto immune disorders.
  • Don't treat any clients with tanned skin, whether by sun, sunbed or self-tan.
  • A tanned skin must be bleached out for 4 weeks before treatment commences.
  • Never treat broken skin or any primary or secondary lesions, avoid all moles.
  • Always perform test spot to ensure power setting is not too high for client's skin type.
  • Permanent eye damage will be caused when emitting the beam directly into the eye.
  • Client and therapist must both wear safety glasses of the correct optical density.
  • Heat application causes light-induced photo-chemical reactions in the target cells.
  • Technician as well as device must be registered with the country’s appropriate health department.
  • Both devices have FDA permission to call the treatment hair reduction only.

Although the intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser are both used as hair removal method, for some strange reason it doesn't work for every client.

Does It Work For Everybody?

Sadly, the answer is no. One client might get good results from a laser, but not from an IPL. Another client might experience the exact opposite. When you compare laser-vs-IPL, luckily most clients get very good results with both these methods.

But only if there is a big difference between the skin and hair colour. The bigger the difference, the better the results of the treatments will be.
