Sugaring Paste

100% Natural Homemade Hair Removal

Ancient sugaring paste or gel is a 100% natural citrus hair removal system without harmful ingredients. It is excellent for male hair removal and good alternatives to waxing.

Why Is It Suitable For Male Epilation?

Cold Waxing And Sugaring Paste Male body hair is thick and springy and have very deep roots.

It is sometimes difficult to epilate all the hair successfully with the first wax application.

Sugaring adheres to the hair, but not to the skin. Chemical wax adheres to the skin too.

Therefore, a second and even third application of sugaring is possible without harming the skin.
Chemical Cold Wax Left And Sugaring Paste Right

With normal chemical wax that is a huge problem, because it adheres to the skin too. The warmed skin can be ripped off in the process.

The tin to the left contains cold waxing and the tin to the right contains sugaring paste. The difference in color and thickness is quite apparent.

Where Did Sugaring Originate?

The sugar waxing technique (described lower on this page) has been handed down from generation to generation of Middle-Eastern women.

The original body paste method is considered the oldest, and still the best, method for male hair removal. Male body hair is thicker and more wiry than female body hair.

It is often compared to waxing, because both are sticky, spread onto the hair and then ripped off. But that is where the comparison ends.

In many ways sugaring paste is the exact opposite of wax! Wax is used hot or just warm.

Is Sugaring Heated? How?

Sugaring Gel Heated In Boiling Water Sugaring paste is used at room temperature. But sugaring gel is heated until melted.

It can be heated in the microwave, in saucepan with boiling water or in a special wax warmer.

But, there is a trick!

Sugaring should never get too hot, nor stay too hot for too long ever.

The hotter it is allowed to get during boiling or re-heating, the harder it sets when it cools down. Every time it is re-heated it becomes harder.

Eventually it becomes too hard to use. But the sugaring won't be wasted, because you can eat it like candy! Ideally you should make just enough for one application.

It really doesn't take that long to prepare. Think of all the money you will be saving.

Sugaring Paste Hair Removal Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups white sugar
¼ cup lemon juice - strained
¼ cup water

EQUIPMENT:
  • Candy thermometer = very important!
  • Wooden spoon for constant stirring
  • Heavy saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Juicer and tea sieve to strain juice
  • Shallow glass/heatproof plastic container with wide neck

PREPARATION METHOD 1 (microwave)
  • Combine ingredients in microwave safe bowl.
  • Microwave on high for about 2-3 minutes.
  • It must bubble into a smooth consistency and turn amber.
  • Let cool 5 minutes before decanting so container doesn't melt or break.Use when nearly completely cooled off or store for later use.

PREPARATION METHOD 1 (stove)
  1. Cut lemon and extract juice. Throw away pips and fibre.
  2. Combine the ingredients in a heavy saucepan, put on stove set on low heat.
  3. Heat very slowly to boiling. Simmer about 15 minutes, but mustn't boil over.
  4. Use a candy thermometer to determine when softball candy stage is reached.
  5. This will happen at 238 Farhenheit or 114,5 Celcius at sea level. Liquid will turn a nice amber colour.
  6. Immediately remove from heat when correct temperature is reached.
  7. Let cool 5 minutes before decanting so container doesn't melt or break.
  8. Use when nearly completely cooled, or store for later use.

I also give the preparation method for the microwave, but find it even more difficult to regulate the temperature than on the stove.

Ancient Body Paste Technique

Sugaring Paste Ball The room temperature method is called body sugaring or sugaring paste. There is a very specific technique to it. Remove a chunk of the paste about the size of a golf ball with the fingers.

Knead this very moldable paste by stretching and folding it several times. The colour will change from bright amber to a dull, whitish cream colour.

Body Sugaring Technique Demonstrated Very Important: Apply the paste against the hair growth. Not with the hair growth, like you do for waxing.

For example, start at the ankle and rub towards the knee. Remove from the knee towards the ankle.

Repeat this upwards rubbing action a few times to ensure all the hair are trapped in the product. Take hold at the top and pull downwards very fast. Never lift up into the air. Try to stay as close to the area being waxed as possible.

Repeat until all the hair are removed. If the ball becomes too hard, a few drops of water may be added and kneaded again. Be very careful not to add too much water. The same ball can be used for a huge area, before eventually discarding it.

Sugaring Gel vs Paste Technique

Sugaring Gel With Homemade Waxing Strips The same recipe is used for the paste and gel technique.

The paste is applied thickly with the hand and then also removed by hand.

Sugaring gel is applied thinly and thick plastic, cloth or special paper strips (7cm X 20cm) are used to remove it.

The photo left shows homemade cold wax strips.
Homemade Denim Waxing Strips In Several Different Sizes

These denim waxing strips are very good to use with the sugaring gel. Ensure there is adequate place to hold on to at the bottom of the strip. Are you sure what the correct waxing technique is?

The differences between the gel and paste techniques are:
  • temperature of product on application
  • thickness and color of product
  • direction of application
  • direction and method of removal.
