Transfollicular Ingrown Hair

Grows Inside Follicle Cavity

The causes of transfollicular ingrown hair are varied. This type of ingrown hair mostly lead to follicle infection. Medical intervention is very often necessary to extract the hair from the skin.

What is it? It is a type of ingrown hair where the hair keeps on growing inside the tiny follicle space until there is no more space left.

When the hair can't get through the follicle opening it turns back and keeps on growing inside the follicle.

This causes the follicle to become inflamed, red and swollen. The coiled hair need to be set free from the cramped space.

There are mostly two scenarios with ingrown hair. Either the tip is very soft or the tip is hard and sharp, cutting its way through the cells under the skin.

Epilated hair grow out with a soft tip, because the hair is removed with the root.

Depilated hair is cut off at the surface of the skin leaving sharp, hard stubble.

The causes of ingrown hair are varied and can present as either transfollicular ingrown hair or extrafollicular ingrown hair.

The first type mostly lead to follicle infection (see folliculitis photos) and medical intervention. In some cases the scars can be permanent.

What causes ingrown hair?

Skin grows over the follicle opening. The hair stays trapped inside the skin and keeps on growing. Shaving is the number one cause of ingrown hair.

Shaving bumps are quite common. It is also known as barber's rash or barber's itch. Tight clothing that irritatingly rubs against the skin is the second culprit.

Temporary depilation hair removal methods (shaving, clippers and depilatory cream) can, and do, cause ingrown hair. The reason is the hair follicles can become irritated and distorted and that can lead to ingrown hair.

Over time epilation methods (waxing, epilators, tweezing, laser and intense pulsed light) cause follicles to shrink. The result is thinner and softer hair.

The soft tipped epilated hair has trouble pushing through the small follicle opening in the skin. The result is quite often an ingrown hair.

What is a transfollicular ingrown hair?

Transfollicular Ingrown Hair This type of ingrown hair happens when the trapped hair turns back into the follicle and just keeps on growing by coiling tightly in the extremely limited space the follicle offers.

The tiny space is very soon completely filled up with the coiled hair.

The hair can't find its way out of the follicle, but keeps on growing.

Swelling, redness and pain starts and the skin feels hot where the infected ingrown hair is blocked underneath the skin surface.

If fungal infection or bacterial infection sets in, it is called folliculitis. Severe cases can require medical intervention to free the hair.

What is an extrafollicular hair?

Transfollicular vs extrafollicular ingrown hair This is when the hair leaves the follicle, but stays inside the skin. This type of ingrown hair is easy to prevent.

This type of ingrown hair grows sideways just under the skin and is clearly visible as a thin line. This normally happens when the follicle is distorted.

When this hair is shaven, an extremely sharp spearlike point is the result because of the strange angle. This sharp tip easily cuts a path under the skin as it keeps on growing.

Ingrown pubic hair can become a big problem after male pubic hair removal has been done. The elastic of underwear causes irritation, which can easily lead to transfollicular ingrown hair.

How can you remove the hair yourself?

Tools to remove transfollicular ingrown hair with Heat - Apply a hot washcloth several times a day to the problem area to soften the skin.

Exfoliate - Very gently exfoliate the skin to remove the dead skin covering the follicle opening.

Moisturize - Apply daily after shower or bath to soften the skin.

Products - Use any of the commercial products for ingrown hair. Alternatively you can try some of the home remedies below.

Sharp needle - Once the hair is visible, it can be removed with a thin sharp needle disinfected with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.

Disinfect - Don't pull the hair out. Use a scissor to clip hair close to the skin. Apply some Bactroban to aid with the healing process. Let the skin and follicle heal with the hair in place.

Treat yourself with homemade remedies

You must first ascertain exactly which type of ingrown hair you are dealing with. The problem will be solved once the hair is freed from the skin.

Apply heat and moisture in the form of a warm, hot washcloth, to the inflamed area to help the hair to grow through the skin's surface.

Try some of the easy and cheap home remedies made with ingredients found in normal kitchens and bathrooms.

Quite possibly this won't work with a transfollicular ingrown hair and you will have to get medical attention.

Everyone who has ever had a transfollicular ingrown hair will agree that it really isn't fun to have. It is always better to prevent ingrown hair than to treat it afterwards.
