Waxing Strips

Male Body Hair Removal

Waxing strips can be either plastic, non-woven or made from cloth like calico or denim. Cold wax is applied very thinly over unwanted hair, the strip is placed over the wax, rubbed vigorously and pulled off very fast.

Correct way to hold waxing strips The sticky, warmed cold wax or sugaring product is applied extremely thinly to large areas of skin and unwanted hair.

You are now faced with the problem of removing this sticky mess that covers the skin and unwanted hair.

The removal problem is solved by using a piece of plastic or cloth, rubbing it onto the product and ripped out when the strip is janked off.

This technique is called cold waxing. It is sometimes better known as strip waxing.

Sugaring paste isn't removed with strips, but with the help of the sugaring product. A very specific technique is used that is totally different to all the other waxing techniques. Follow the above link to read more about it.

Types of waxing strips

Cold wax and sugaring gel have to be removed with the help of waxing strips. The following types are available:

1. Plastic or cellophane strips

All waxing equipment can be bought. Plastic or cellophane waxing strips can be bought ready cut. Or you can buy a roll and cut it to the lengths you prefer.

The nice thing about plastic or cellophane is that you can actually see what you are doing underneath it. The expenses of the waxing salon is kept low, because these strips are very cheap.

2. Non-woven strips

This type of strips look a lot like the iron-on vilene your mother, wife or girlfriend use for dressmaking to stiffen facings, collars and other things.

It can be bought ready cut in packs of 50 or 100 pieces. It is also available as a roll that can be cut into any length.

The quality can differ a lot. Sometimes a strip can tear lengthwise at the moment of pulling. When you find strips you like, you ought to buy some extras.

Because there is no way of salvaging the wax or the strips to re-use it again, the client can be assured that this treatment is as hygienic as it can possibly get! Bacterial skin infection need not be a worry.

3. Cloth strips

Make homemade waxing strips with calico People who want to do waxing at home buy material like muslin and cut it up for homemade body hair removal strips.

Personally I haven't had a lot of success with such thin material. I prefer cloth with more substance. Something like unbleached calico or denim.

There is no need to overlock the edges if you plan to use it with cold wax, because each strip will only be used once and is then thrown away.

If you plan to use the homemade cold wax strips with sugaring, you can either make the strips from unbleached calico or discarded denim jeans.

Homemade calico and denim waxing strips It is recommended to overlock or zig-zag the edges to keep it from fraying when it is washed.

Of course it will only be washed when it is used with sugaring, because it is water soluble.

A positive of cloth strips is it won't tear like some non-woven strips sometimes do.

Because calico is so cheap, it might even work out more cost-efficient than store bought strips.

It will take some time to do the cutting.

But, this way you can cut the strips as big or as small as you like. A good all purpose size is roughly 7,5x18cm.

How to use waxing strips

Cold wax and sugaring never sets hard and remains sticky. The hair will bond to it when the strip is placed on the wax and rubbed hard before pulling it off.

TIP: Take care to place the bottom of the strip where no wax was applied. This is to ensure you have something to hold on to. Another tip is to fold the bottom of the strip over to ensure you have some place to grip on to.

Pull back almost parallel to the skin (never up into the air) in one fast action to remove the hair cleanly and efficiently.

Where can this method be used?

Best results are achieved on areas with fewer and softer hair. Not suitable for underarm or pubic hair removal. Very suitable for legs, arms, back, chest, feet, toes, fingers and upper lip (ladies).

Wax removal technique

Smooth firmly with the hair growth direction to bond hair with the wax. Always start to remove the strip at the lowest point (ankle) and work upwards (knee).

The skin should be stretched in the opposite direction you are going to pull the strip. The strip is pulled off against the hair growth direction. Pull almost parallel to the skin, never up into the air.

Directly after pulling, press your free hand firmly down on the waxed area. This is to lessen the feeling of pain. It works!

When the strip becomes too heavy and clogged, it is time to take a new one. Don't worry, you'll know when it is the right time to throw it into the waste bin.
