Hair Waxing Tips

For Quick Hair Removal

Learn waxing tips to make the male body hair removal experience of body waxing easier for salon or DIY waxing. Waxing is a quick hair removal method that gives long lasting results.

Waxing tips - throw all disposables away immediately Waxing is considered the best hair removal for longer term results lasting several weeks.

Chemical hot waxing and cold waxing can be used. The body area that must be waxed will determine which type of wax will be used.

Hot wax is always used on the coarse underarm and pubic hair. Cold wax is used for the rest of the body.

Or the 100% natural hair removal method of sugaring hair removal is another excellent option that is available.

Waxing is used for longer term epilation of unwanted body hair of males and females.

Waxing gives quick hair removal without the negatives of shaving.

Genetic predisposition towards hairiness will determine hair regrowth speed after waxing.

The image above is of some disposable waxing equipment that I have used for a hot wax treatment. All of these will be disposed of as soon as the client has left.

Ready to throw into the waste bin: several hot wax pieces, disposable panty, paper bed cover, wooden spatula and used cotton wool.

Never, ever re-use any waxing product. You really don't want the client to get a bacterial skin infection at your salon, do you? View some folliculitis pictures to illustrate my point.

O yes, and remember a fresh towel for each client. A warm blanket, or even an electric one on the bed during winter, will be greatly appreciated by your client.

Useful waxing tips

  1. Pain relief - Any skin numbing cream like Emla may be applied an hour before the waxing treatment commences. Emla is very expensive, so I recommend you buy something similar at a tattoo shop - for much less. Or take 1 or 2 pain relief pills if you prefer.

  2. Hair length - For hot wax hair removal the underarm hair or pubic hair should be about 0.5cm or longer in length for the wax to get a really good grip on the hair. Body hair can be shorter for cold waxing and sugaring.

  3. Waxing kit - After several professional waxing treatments, you might want to try a DIY kit for at home waxing. You will be able to buy that at most pharmacies as well as distributors of salon products.

  4. Practice with sugaring - Some good waxing tips would be to suggest sugaring hair removal recipies while still struggling with your waxing technique. It can be washed off if with water if you develop cold feet. Enlist help for difficult to reach areas - meaning the whole back of your body!

  5. Start small - Novices should start with small rectangular or square patches until they get the hang of the techniques first. As you become more advanced, you can apply bigger patches of melted wax.

  6. Area size - Cold waxing can be applied to big areas, like the whole back or the whole chest in one go to save time. Then waxing strips are used to remove the wax in sections the size of the waxing strip.
  7. The area covered with hot wax must be the size that can easily be removed with one movement. A comfortable size is about 5cmx10cm or 2"x4".

  8. Contraindications - Don't wax over varicose veins, because the veins can be ripped open. Avoid broken or damaged skin where bacteria can enter, causing inflammation.

  9. Waxing tips - apply powder to absorb moisture
  10. Powder - Apply baby powder or cornflour very thinly to the skin to absorb body oils or dampness before commencing with the waxing procedure.

Remove excess powder with cotton wool by rubbing it against hair growth direction. This also helps to lift hair away from the skin.

  11. Heating the wax - Several methods are available to you. It can be melted in the microwave, tin placed inside a saucepan of boiling water on the stove, directly decanted into a saucepan on the stove, in an electric wax warmer, baby bottle warmer, etc. Would you like to have some waxing tips about the waxing equipment you might need?

  12. Temperature - Always test the temperature of the wax on the inside of your own wrist and then on the wrist of the person that is going to be waxed. Different people handle temperatures differently. Let the wax cool if it feels too hot before applying it.

  13. Blow - Some waxing tips you'll quickly use, is to blow very hard on the wax if it feels too hot for the client. Another tip is to quickly rub over wax with an ice cube.

  14. Don't overheat - Wax must feel warm, but not hot. Never, ever heat wax to the point of smoking. That changes the consistency, and with it the ease of use, because afterwards it becomes less pliable and more brittle.

  15. No metal - Never use a metal utencil like a knife to apply the wax. Metal absorbs the heat and might burn the skin. Always use wooden spatulas, or wooden tongue depressors like the docter uses. Break tongue depressor in the length to get a fine tip for precision work.

  16. Waxing tips - never pull waxing strip up into the air
  17. Wrong technique - Do NOT pull up into the air, because the skin becomes very stretched! The hair might break off or the warmed skin can even be torn off.

The wrong technique can very easily lead to nasty and unwanted ingrown hair. The photo to the right clearly demonstrates the wrong way to pull a waxing strip.
Waxing tips - pull waxing strip parallel to the skin

  18. Correct technique - The photo to the right clearly illustrates the correct technique. The strip should be pulled off in one firm and very fast action.

It goes without saying that you must use your "intelligent" hand to rip off the waxing strip. Your stupid hand is used to stretch the skin in the opposite direction.

  19. Stretch skin - Try to keep the waxing strip as parallel to the skin as possible. Always pull the skin taught in the opposite direction you are going to pull the wax off. Stretch the skin with the free hand. The client's help is always welcome here. This is especially important on the tender skin in the groin region.

  20. Pressure - Immediately after ripping the hair out, apply pressure with the free hand you used to stretch the skin. This is done to lessen pain. It really, really works.

  21. One application - Try not to wax the same area more than once. Especially on the scrotum during a brazilian wax job. One application is always best. The skin can be damaged if you go over it for a second and third time, because it has been softened by the warmed wax.

  22. Stray hair - Tweeze any stray hair that weren't removed at the end of the waxing treatment. Tweezing is optional and many clients don't want it.

  23. Redness - Rub ice cubes over waxed skin to soothe it very quickly and to reduce redness. The cubes can be used as is, or it can be knotted in a piece of thin cloth.

  24. Wax pieces - Remove any traces of wax with special after waxing lotion. Baby oil works wonderful. You can also apply soothing Aloe Vera gel or Tea Tree Oil mixed into Baby oil to the treated area.

  25. Tight clothes - Do you want some more waxing tips? Avoid tight clothes and underclothes that might be irritating for 1-3 days or until the skin doesn't feel irritated any longer.

  26. Avoid this - Very hot baths, saunas and suntanning for 1-3 days after any type of body waxing treatment. Avoid doing any very strenuous exercise that will cause a lot of sweating. Apply this until the irritation or waxing rash is gone. The waxing bumps will disappear within a few, or at most, 48 hours.

  27. Throw away - Discard all disposable waxing equipment. Throw away all used hot wax, cold waxing strips, disposable panties, paper bed covers, latex gloves, cotton wool and wooden spatulas used to apply the wax with. Never re-use hot wax, because it can lead to all sorts of unwelcome skin infections.

  28. Exfoliate - All the good waxing tips above will mean nothing if you don't do regular skin exfoliation followed by some skin cream to keep the skin surface soft to discourage ingrown hair.

Please tell us your story about which of the body waxing treatments you prefer to do or to receive. Or share any waxing tips you might have. Always welcome!
